Archetypal beings
All descended lines of beings of the finite dimensions, continued the waves, and all stages of growth in each one of these beings, are merely manifestations of one archetypal and eternal being in the space outside dimensions. Each local being - son, father, grandfather, and so on - and each stage of individual being - infant, child, boy, man - is merely one of the infinite phases of that same archetypal and eternal being, caused by a variation in the angle of the consciousness-plane which cuts it.- HP Lovecraft with E. Hoffman Price, Through The Gates of the Silver Key [source]
"The idea is not that there was likely an original human model that they were copied from. The idea was that these models of Cylon were sort of developed out of their own study of us. The Cylons on some level looked at humanity and said 'You know what? There's really only twelve of you.' If these are the twelve, and sort of if you look at them they each represent different archetypes of what humanity is."- Ronald D. Moore, producer of the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series [source]

That quote is actually a decent definition of a "standing wave" in quantum mechanics. The idea that the human mind is a sort of a quantum processor, where all of history has already happened but that the human mind perceives only one slice of it has been bounced around by multiple authors, philosophers, and physicists.
I've read almost all of HP Lovecraft's Cthulu mythos, but not his essays or philosophical works. Stephen King did a tribute with his short story "N.", that published as a video podcast (www.nishere.com) and published in the anthology "Just After Sunset" (11/11/2008)
Yet another reason to respect the mind of HP Lovecraft? He's still influencing today's authors and producers.
According to the introduction to the "At the Mountains of Madness" compilation, Lovecraft was fascinated by the recent scientific discoveries of his day so it's not surprising. I didn't think of the quantum physics analogy though =)

I believe it's kind of simplistic to boil down people to archetypes. The thing is, it actually applies to the vast majority of people, but there are still infinite archetypes applied in an infinite combination for a small, small minority. Perhaps if you boil that last segment down into a 'chaotic' archetype....
But that's just ignoring the truth for a convenience.
