Masuk angin keluar asap

I'm sort of glad Dr. Mahatir retired a few years back. He's got to be the only third world dictator ever to do so voluntarily. I'm getting increasingly convinced he's pretty nyanyok now though. Check this out.

The former prime minister said bloggers should not tell lies and untruths, and because there were no laws governing them, their freedom to write anything could negatively affect the development of the country.

“Although bloggers are not subject to the same laws governing the mainstream media, they should write the truth all the same.

And a few paragraphs later:

Dr Mahathir also apologised to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for accusing him of owning a house in Perth, Australia.

He said he got carried away when he mentioned it at a talk in Kulai, Johor, on March 29 recently and added it was based on a rumour.

Seriously lah...Malaysian public officials and politicians clearly don't know anything about the internet or they wouldn't have come up with such a hare-brained idea as registering "bloggers". There's clearly a difference between people with huge reputations who do it on a semi-professional basis like Jeff Ooi and idiots like me* who do it just to waste time, but it's along a spectrum. There is no discrete cut-off that would distinguish the "bloggers" the government wants to take down.

*Or Michael Ooi, for that matter (Just kidding. Read his blog, it's damn funny, and he's one of the more popular non-political Malaysian bloggers.)

Hindi ko maintidihan. :) What's "nyanyok?" I'm guessing from context, it means "manic" or "insane?"

You took the time to explain Chee cheong fun for us (much appreciated, sounds like a delicacy, similar to Filipino Dinuguan: Pork and tripe with cow blood sauce).

Tossing in Tagalog, Malay, or Latin into a predominantly English blog is fun, but it helps to either use Acronym tags or explanations for your readers. ...otherwise, you just get confusion or frustration.

Close guess on "nyanyok". Actually it means senile. Dr Mahatir is pretty old, I believe he's close to 80. I tend to use Malaysian slang because most of the people I know of who read my blog are friends from back home.

Thanks for the tip about acronym tags. I just Googled them, didn't know about them before.

Chee cheong fun doesn't actually contain pig intestines, it's just the morphological resemblance to them - a sheet of dough rolled into a tube and slice up. Same with "lo shee fun" - rat's tail noodles.

Did you live in the Philippines at some point, or do you just have a lot of Filipino friends? You look like a white guy from the pix on your blog =)

Yep, I'm puti (Tagalog: "white"). My family is Hungarian and spoke Magyar at home, but I never learned.

My wife is Filipino. She was born in Manila, moved here during the 80's, lived here since. I've learned a fair amount of Tagalog since her family speaks it at home and around us. We also get The Filipino Channel (TFC) through Verizon FiOS. I don't watch the soaps, but the game shows and movies are interesting.

I was shocked at the number of rice cookers we received at our wedding. We already had one, and we got two as gifts. I joked with my family that rice cookers now account for half our utility bills.

Anyhoo... cool blog you have, and great comments on Gizmodo. :) Have fun with the acronym tags.
